Building Spiritually Inclusive Cultural Collections-Paganism in Utah
1:30pm-1:50pm
Daniel Cureton, Utah Pride Center Library

This presentation will demonstrate the need for building inclusive spiritual archives. Pagans in Utah are a minority population, with many activities happening yearly, but few are documented. Over the last five years, the Marriott Library archives has made a specific goal to collect papers and ephemera from groups and events from around the Utah Pagan community. The rate at which this specific community changes, the dissolution of groups and their documents, the intolerance of majority faiths, and the censoring of the historical records away from these communities, makes their documentation and inclusion in spiritual collections ever more important. Collecting archival papers and popular spiritual books, and creating exhibitions and displays are all strategies that can be taken to build more inclusive spiritual collections.

Bringing in fresh faces: Creating a diversity residency program
1:55pm-2:20pm
Twanna Hodge, J. Willard Marriott Library, University of Utah
Lorelei Rutledge, J. Willard Marriott Library, University of Utah

The J. Willard Marriott Library hired its first diversity resident as part of an inaugural program in July 2015. In this presentation, the resident and her supervisor will discuss why the residency program was created and how it benefits both the resident and the hosting institution. We will also offer suggestions for how participants interested in creating a similar program can gain support from administration for a residency, important things to remember when planning a residency, how to identify and overcome potential barriers to a successful residency, and how the resident interacts with other entities in the library and on campus.
