EXTRA: Examining AV Enterprise at a Regional Academic Archive

In 2014, a grant to digitize the local television newsmagazine EXTRA (1977-1984) became a turning point for the J. Willard Marriott Library’s AV Archive, helping to redefine its operations and role within the Library. Running an AV archive inside an academic library requires finding a place for archival AV alongside traditional print materials, online databases, and other physical and digital resources. Over the past year, representatives from Special Collections and IT came together to explore how to enhance communication and improve efficiency in interdepartmental workflows, evaluate the needs of archival collections, recognize institutional capacity when writing grants and planning projects, and introduce archival materials to the community, all because of a small, grant-funded project to digitize decaying U-matic videocassettes of EXTRA. In this case study, speakers from Special Collections and Digital Preservation will discuss the significant institutional
takeaways for regional archives and academic libraries who are just beginning to tackle their AV collections.
