Maximum benefit, minimum wage : How to find, train, and motivate the best student employees

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Librarians are often called on to supervise student employees, pages, and clerks for a variety of reasons. Whether they’re college students trying to complete a degree, volunteers from the community, or high school students looking for an after-school job, most of our libraries would grind to a halt without their help. This roundtable-style presentation aims to bring together library supervisors of all sorts and answer the questions: How do you find the best? What is your training regimen like? How do you keep student employees happy, and how do you minimize turnover? Come discuss these topics, and any others you have on your mind, with your fellow supervisors!

Reference & Instruction Manager, LDS Business College
I'm a former gov docs librarian now teaching information literacy and managing students at the circulation desk. People should talk to me about reference! And instruction! And techniques to motivate and train student employees! Not because I know anything substantial about these topics, but because I hope to absorb all I can from everyone else. Like a sentient ShamWow.
